The IEMMC Experience.

WARNING!

Do not sign me up for any mail lists. Studio42 does not accept such unsolicited business. Also, since I've recently been getting a flood of such e-mail from various people and organizations I don't wish to deal with, their names will end up here, along with their home and business addresses, and phone numbers, whenever possible.
Please realize that 99.9% of internet users DON'T want your crap in our e-mail boxes.
Minimum fine for violation of this policy allows me to legally bill/invoice for $500 and this can be escalated to a court of law.

Updated on October 18, 1997 to further prove IEMMC is not living up to its promises. Not like that is surprising in any way.
The spamming companies have recently come under a lot of scrutiny, especially since their spams violate advertising laws, First Ammendment rights and are driving UP the costs of internet access globally. Sanford Wallace has lost many lawsuits by breaking agreements or finding ways around firewalls intended to block his unrequested material by customers of AOL and CompuServe. He's approaching life from the standpoint that every person wants his material, while the rest of the universe is taking the stand that we don't want this stuff.

Bowing to public pressure, Sanford Wallace implemented a removal service into his system. However, what he failed to say is that his removal service is used to verify addresses so valid lists can be created and/or sold to other spamers, or used by his service to continue to spam. I have proof of this lie online. When a removal request is "acknowledged", there is a short break from the spam, and then it starts up again.

After seeing through this, Sanford Wallace again loses another lawsuit. Now instead of having an opt-out service(which is illegal), a group calling themselves IEMMC has decided to enter the picture for the opt-out scene. Does their system work? We shall see. Recently I've gotten quite a bit of CyberPromo garbage claiming that by going to IEMMC I can request removal from all of this lists I never signed up for.

Out of frustration and desperation for some relief, I decided to go to IEMMC to get myself removed. I recently had Netscape set up to alert me whenever a cookie was sent so I could cancel it. I did this based on the knowledge that CyberPromo sends a LOT of cookies to gather information from a web client, which I find invasive to my privacy. Also, to help protect me, I have altered all of the personal information on all of my installed web clients to help prevent being spammed or having my information lifted while I explore the internet. When I visited IEMMC's site, I was sent an average of 6 cookies per page, which is annoying since I chose to cancel all of the cookies.

So, let me describe the experience:
There is a link for address removal. Go there. Enter your email address and submit the form.

IEMMC then emails you a "code", to ensure that this is a valid email address. Of course, this could be two-fold, as they could be harvesting valid addresses as well. This is what that email address looks like:

Subject: Removal_Request

We have received your request to be removed from all
of our mailing lists.

To complete the process, please write down the following token:

XXXXXX

Return to our website at http://www.iemmc.org/validate.html
and input your token and your E-mail address as entered
previously. You will then receive an E-mail confirmation
of your removal.

Thank you for your time,
IEMMC Webmaster

I placed "XXXXXX" where the token was displayed. You then follow the indicated link. The system then returns to you saying that your email address will be removed from all lists within 24 hours. We shall see if IEMMC lives up to their promises. To be honest, I have serious doubts about the effectiveness of this service, as I strongly suspect they are using this system to harvest valid email addresses for use for future spamming lists. I am hoping that IEMMC is an honest and ethical service and I will no longer be spammed via this organization, either directly or those using their facilities. I will update this page after several months to report on my progress. In the meantime, I will create a new page to showcase any future IEMMC spammers who spam me after the date of the IEMMC removal notice. Still, let's consider this traceroute to contemplate the validity of this organization. This is sounding more and more like organized crime to me:

Since It appears that CyberPromo is going to spam my other addresess, I've been slowly going through spams one by one and finding out which addresses have been spammed under the IEMMC guise(AKA, any CyberPromo garbage) and going through the IEMMC removal process. What I find amusing is that a couple of days earlier, my work address was NOT in that list, so I would say it is safe to assume that addresses not in this list that request removal are added to the list automatically.

Here it is, 4:45 AM on Monday, July 28, 1997 and still the response of the IEMMC server is slow. It took 5 minutes to process my email address for work, and I'm still waiting for it to process the actual remove request. Then I will have to do this for another work address. If they would stop maintaining such illegal mailing lists, this would take a lot less time. I simply don't see how random mass mailings can be productive as I reject ALL solicitations. What angers me is that I have a spam sitting at the office that I may not be able to quickly place online due to my hectic schedule.

I really hate opt-out systems, especially when I never did anything to indicate that I wanted to participate in this garbage. When I have time to handle this properly, I am going to place the IEMMC replies/responses online as if they were spams on a per account basis. This will provide valid proof that CyberPromo has been alerted I do not want their garbage and will serve as evidence should this go to a court of law.

As stated previously, I am entering into this system with the knowledge that this is most likely not going to work. I will suspect that even if I remove any known address of mine, CyberPromo will continue to spam me. At least I've found a method of getting even.
It took two days, but I was also able to have my work address removed. It would appear that their little web server is being overtaxed by other angry net users trying in vain to get their addresses removed.
  • See the notice I removed the "token" again to protect my privacy, or lack there of.

    UPDATE 07/29/97

Well, that was short but brief. I have already been spammed again by CyberPromo. Apparently the truth of the matter is that once you get removed from the IEMMC lists, you no longer get that drivel in the forged headers. That didn't take long. It is quite obvious that CyberPromo is going to spam regardless of what you do to get off their lists. This is consistent as they have lied about everything else in the past, so I see no reason why they should do so now. Please see the CyberPromo 1 page and the 7/29/1997 listing regarding an MLM scam.

I must admit that I have still not seen the email confirmation of my removal request. Perhaps that is how they are allowed to continue the scamming and spamming.

    UPDATE 08/02/1997

Well, I have yet another one of their little notices in the headers of an email to my personal account. This proves that CyberPromo is lying about their removal lists.

  • See proof

See why dealing with liars is not fun? This just goes to show the lack of integrity and ethics of spammers. CyberPromo invented IEMMC to try and avoid some legal heat, but it appears that this bogus organization is not going to help them in any way. This is also why "opt-out" lists should be illegal. I never signed up for any of their mailing lists, so why am I getting their garbage? Why do I repeatedly ask for removal, get the removal confirmed, and then get spammed again?

    UPDATE 08/05/1997

More IEMMC-noticed crap. It would be nice if they would actually remove people from their lists.

  • More CyberPromo spam

    08/05/1997

For reasons that elude me, possibly due to temporary insanity, I am once again trying to get my personal email address off of IEMMC's bogus mailing lists. Let's see my latest adventure in pointlessness:
    Subject: Removal_Request
    Date: 08/05 12:17 PM
    Received: 08/05 12:24 PM
    From: WWW-server, www@www.iemmc.org
    To: Chris Pickett, cpicket@ns.net

  • See proof
  • No confirmation email. What a surprise. By the way, the IEMMC site is really lame.
IEMMC, in an effort to dodge responsibility, has declared my requests for removal invalid since they also have my mail alias. Odd, I don't remember ever giving out my mail alias. This clearly shows unethical behavior. As such, I requested that address to be removed. Sorry, but the headers to not completely confirm this, but I know what I did.
  • See proof

    UPDATE 08/08/1997

Some idiot spammed my via my MediaCity account. What annoys me is that MediaCity installed some spam preventing software that is supposed to reject addresses that can't be validated. This does not show a weakness on MediaCity's behalf, since it shows that REAL people with REAL addresses are the ones spamming via such services.

So, since IEMMC has chosen to spam me regardless(they seem to move from one address to another. Now their excuse is that aliases are also used. This shows exactly how unethical these lists are. People aren't going to list their mail aliases or POP3 logins, mainly because that is inconvenient. This means these search bots are hitting MAIL SERVERS to strip out addresses. Knowing this, I've requested removal of my MediaCity accounts:
  • See this spam
    See the removal requests:
  • See proof
  • See proof

But apparently that isn't good enough, as I recieved an identical spam at another MediaCity account:
  • See that spam
    See these removal requests:

True to form, on August 8, 1997, I was spammed again via my home account, after being off their list for over a full 24 hours. IEMMC lies on many levels. If you see their site, and look at who they have removed, this will further prove that.
  • See proof
No surprise to anyone, my work address has been spammed again.
    See the proof
I will be sending the removal requests along with this spam to IEMMC and see if that will stop their excuses. I doubt it, they are run by CyberPromo, which is in the business to annoy.
After a short break, on August 24, 1997, I was spammed by some porn pusher at my home address, which should have been removed from their lists for quite some time.
    Proof of IEMMC's lies

On September 6, I got some more spam. This was sent via servers that claim to go through the IEMMC filters. To the surprise of nobody, I am still getting spam.
  • See the proof
On September 7, 1997, I received more spam. This bypassed the IEMMC remove filters because this was not sent through spam servers. I received this three times via two addresses.
  • See the report
  • See the report
  • See the report
NancyNet told me to go to IEMMC to get myself removed. I've already done that. Many times.

    UPDATE: September 17, 1997

  • Porno Spam Page 1
Although nothing traced back directly to CyberPromo, they do mention that I should go to IEMMC for removal. What? Must I go to IEMMC 5 times a day, every day, in order to get removed?
    This is harrassment.

    UPDATE: October 18, 1997

    Wow, over a month!
IEMMC doesn't work anyways, it's merely a ploy. Now with CyberPromo down hopefully for good, I will get even less IEMMC crap. However, here is the latest.
  • Deadbeats Page 13
The address that was spammed is on their removal list. It appears IEMMC just doesn't work. That means all the stuff on their site are lies. I'm also willing to bet their "discipline"-style notices are also false, placed there to give a false sense if security.

If you are one of the dilweeds who sent me unsolicited email or are someone thinking about it, drop dead.
